Abstract: Controlled experiments on crisis management could provide many insights into the human factors that lead to effective performance in the area. However, the challenge of establishing a controlled environment directly relevant to the chaotic settings in which crisis management occurs means that such experiments are scarce. Here, we describe our attempt to use a videogame (ARMA III) as a realistic but controllable environment for research in this domain. We successfully developed a testbed linking the game world to the front-end of a prototype command-and-control system, so that one can use the latter to monitor events in the former. However, when it came to developing controlled scenarios for the experiment, we discovered that too much realism can be a problem. This paper outlines the challenges we encountered and provides recommendations for researchers and game designers interested in the use of serious games in scientific research.

Abstract: This paper attempts to reveal the “black box” of information processing activities by relying on Sensemaking as a methodology and as the object of research. In particular, this research aims at studying intuitive information processing activities in ongoing crisis situations, one of the most extreme contexts in which discontinuity is the rule and continuity the exception. The authors argue that this Sensemaking approach offers valuable insights for the design of information systems for crisis response and management (ISCRAM). This paper describes an interpretive case study methodology as it was applied to discover Sensemaking episodes in the daily work of humanitarian relief actors in the ongoing crisis of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Abstract: The proposed research consists of an innovative research design and piloting to compare traditional and contemporary approaches to loss-related decisions, concerning flooding risk in particular. By developing and implementing the integration of multiple methods, the proposed research aims to provide detailed and compelling evidence of how disaster-related decisions can be evaluated using an out-of-frame (capacity) and out-of-sample (occurrence) criterion, i.e. instead of taking a more reductive approach to real world problems. Together with other research being conducted around the world, the current initiative will address the contemporary scientific problem of whether traditionally axiomatic or ecological rationality should be used for evaluating disaster-related decisions. Where ecological rationality is found to be more effective, the same research will inform how ecologically rational approaches to flood risk can be improved through promoting particular areas of an information display or interface under particular conditions.
