Abstract |
Twitter is a very important source for obtaining information, especially during events such as natural disasters. Users can spread information in Twitter either by crafting new posts, which are called ?tweets,? or by using retweet mechanism to re-post the previously created tweets. During natural disasters, identifying how likely a tweet is to be highly retweeted is very important since it can help promote the spread of good information in a network such as Twitter, as well as it can help stop the spread of misinformation, when corroborated with approaches that identify trustworthy information or misinformation, respectively. In this paper, we present an analysis on retweeted tweets to determine several aspects affecting retweetability. We then extract features from tweets? content and user account information and perform experiments to develop models that automatically predict the retweetability of a tweet in the context of the Hurricane Sandy. |

Abstract |
To this date, research on crisis informatics has focused on the detection of trust in Twitter data through the use of message structure, sentiment, propagation and author. Little research has examined the usefulness of these messages in the crisis response domain. Toward detecting useful messages in case of crisis, in this paper, we characterize tweets, which are perceived useful or trustworthy, and determine their main features. Our analysis is carried out on two datasets (one natural and one man made) gathered from Twitter concerning hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the Boston Bombing 2013. The results indicate that there is a high correlation and similar factors (support for the victims, informational data, use of humor and type of emotion used) influencing trustworthiness and usefulness for both disaster types. This could have impacts on how messages from social media data are analyzed for use in crisis response. |

Abstract |
In order to deal with the huge threat and loss caused by the earthquake, established the evaluation system and model, and the risk zoning map is drawn according to the study of the vulnerability of Xicheng District's streets. According to the spatial coupling relationship between social vulnerability and physical vulnerability, drawn the comprehensive risk zoning map of Shichahai street as a typical case. The results show that Xicheng District and Shichahai street have their own vulnerability, which is very different from the social vulnerability and physical vulnerability of different streets and communities. |

Abstract |
Topological structure vulnerability assessment approach for Urban Metro Networks (UMNS) was proposed in order to decrease the impact caused by incidents. Failure scale of stations and sections random failure and target attacks was evaluated. The results show that UMNS is more vulnerable to target attacks on stations than random failure on stations. But UMNS is less vulnerable to target attacks on sections than random failure on sections. Additionally, UMNS is more vulnerable to station failure than sections. It could be concluded as more resources should be put on big transfer stations in UMNS operation management to avoid large scale impacts. The proposed methodology is not intended to predict the occurrence of events but rather to be used a management tool. Results from the evaluation are valuable elements in planning UMNS. They can be used for network planning, further detailed hazard studies, deciding on the arrangement of emergency resources. |

Abstract |
The FLUIDE Framework supports development of flexible emergency response user interfaces, meeting the special challenges when developing such user interfaces. This paper presents the FLUIDE Framework with particular emphasis on its specifications languages. We demonstrate the FLUIDE Framework by giving examples from the FLUIDE specification of the user interface of an application supporting management of unmanned vehicles in search and rescue operations. We also report the findings from an experiment investigating how easy FLUIDE specifications are to understand for systems developers not knowing FLUIDE. |

Abstract |
Crises range from global catastrophes to personal disasters. However, systematic inquiry on crises rarely employs a comparative approach to examine commonalities between these seemingly very different events. We argue here that individual psychosocial disasters can inform a broader discussion on crises. Our approach applies general crisis theory to a smartphone based psychosocial support system for US military veterans. We engaged in a process designed to explore how veteran peer-to-peer mentorship can be augmented with IS support to display potential early warning signs as first step toward preventative intervention for high risk behaviors. To gain a better understanding of how military veterans might benefit from such a system, this article focuses on a community collaborative design process. The co-design process used the Small Stories method, allowing important cultural characteristics of to emerge, illuminating considerations in IS design with military veterans, and highlighting how humans think about crisis events at the individual level. |

Abstract |
In the past few years, volunteered geographic information (VGI) has emerged as a new resource for improving the management of emergencies. Despite the growing body of research dedicated to the use of VGI in crisis management, studies are still needed that systematically investigate the incorporation of VGI into practical emergency management. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a research design for investigating and planning the incorporation of VGI into work practices and decision-making of emergency agencies by means of simulation exercises. Furthermore, first lessons are drawn from a field study performed within a simulation exercise of an urban fire in Coimbra, Portugal, implemented together with local civil protection agents. Emergency management practitioners identified a high potential in the pictures taken in-situ by volunteers for improving situational awareness and supporting decision-making. They also pointed out to challenges associated to processing VGI and filtering high-value information in real-time. |

Abstract |
Many people die or are lost every year during mass gatherings around the world hence making it very difficult for the local authorities to track them and identify them in case of accidents. This paper proposes a system for tracing of lost, injured and dead using network of Radio Frequency Identifiers (RFID) tags and mobile phones. With such a system, time, effort, and cost can be significantly minimized hence eliminating the psychological torture through which relatives of the lost passes though. The proposed system can also be used for crowd management in a real time. For outdoor tracking, where placing RFID readers is not practical, the paper proposes mobile-based peer to peer network for tracking pilgrims who don?t have access to the internet or don?t have GPS facility in their mobile phones. The paper also proposed a plan of testing the prototype in simulation. |
