Abstract: Aerial photo interpretation were utilized for monitoring land cover changes with emphasis on tsunami ravaged coastal regions in Phi Phi Island, Krabi Province and Ban Num Kem, Bang Muang, Pang Nga Province areas in the southern peninsula Thailand. All of the images acquired after the Dec 26/2004 tsunami hit, were analyzed and results were compared to image taken before to address the tsunami-affected communities' details. Results of interpretation show different land cover changes in different areas due to the former land cover/land use. It was also showed that aerial photo interpretation data are capable of identification on devastated areas with a high level of accuracy at scale of 1:25, 000. Special attention is given to a few examples of Ban Num Kem village in Takuepa District, Pang Nga Province and Phi Phi Island, Krabi Province.

Abstract: We investigated the value of different media types (Photo, Video, Audio) to support the situational awareness of a Command and Control (C2) officer monitoring three simultaneous military operations. Twenty-one Polish soldiers individually monitored the real-time battlefield information collected by three (virtual, scripted) platoons. Twice during the monitoring task a series of Situation Awareness (SA) probes were presented (Endsley, 1995). At the end of the task, participants were also given a series of meta-SA probes and preference questions. We found that Video supported Level 2 SA (comprehension) better than the other two media types. We also found that participants preferred to receive information in the Photos and Audio clips than in Video. We conclude that if the goal of the C2 team is to better understand the global situation, then providing the persons-in-the-field with video cameras is a valid solution. However, we obtained no evidence to suggest that such an approach supports the ability to predict what may occur in the future (Level 3 SA). © 2012 ISCRAM.

Abstract: The chances of survival of a victim of cardiac arrest or stroke decrease considerably without rapid intervention. Bystanders, the first people able to intervene, are however few to act. This ignorance of the seriousness signs of the pathologies, and of the importance of acting, combined with a feeling of incapacity to perform emergency gestures, are the main reasons for this low level of action. The absence of knowledge originates both from a lack of training and from forgetting training courses. To overcome this problem, some trainings propose high fidelity simulation devices associated with a debriefing to create a strong emotional impact leading to a stronger memory impact. To assess the impact of this type of simulation, we set up a Living Lab including a high fidelity simulation of emergency situations (with citizens, dispatchers, first responders and paramedics), a debriefing and a method to create a “trace of activity”, still aiming at generating a higher memory impact. To measure the effects of the Living Lab, we analyzed the emotional impacts evoked by the participants, categorized the learning and finally studied the creation of the activity trace. The results show that the Living-Lab elicits emotions (for the cardiac arrest scenario) and projections (for the stroke scenario) and can therefore potentially improve the retention. The learnings were of several natures: individual and practical learnings on emergency management, learnings on collaboration within the chain of survival and theoretical learnings. Analysis of the retained learning after 2 to 8 months is in progress, therefore no results are available yet.

Abstract: Eyewitness photography is increasingly playing a more significant role in disaster response and recovery efforts. This research elaborates on the ways in which members of the public participate during times of disaster by closely examining the evolving role of a prominent photo-sharing website, Flickr, in events that have occurred since its launch in February 2004. We discuss features of Flickr's emerging evolutionary growth as a community forum for disaster-related grassroots activity based on the findings from our qualitative study of 29 groups across six disasters over Flickr's nearly three-year lifespan. Our findings discuss efforts toward the development of norms that attempt to guide the nature of social practice around photographic content during disaster response and recovery efforts.
